In May 2022, a group of individuals from various judicial training institutes from across the African continent gathered in Dakar, Senegal, and agreed that there was a need for a pan-African organisation that could develop shared norms and standards, share best practice and challenges, and craft ongoing shared programmes that are responsive to the needs and challenges of Africa.

In January 2023, the group reconvened in Cape Town, South Africa, where they crafted a constitution, elected a steering committee, and officially established the African Network of Judicial Trainers.

The African Network of Judicial Trainers, now a registered non-profit, designated the Judicial Institute for Africa (JIFA) as the secretariat, located at the University of Cape Town.

In 2024, the African Network of Judicial Trainers gathered in Zanzibar for their inaugural AGM and conference. Over the course of three days, they welcomed two new members, elected a new chairperson, and engaged in discussions highlighting the significance of the Bangalore Principles in judicial training, the impact of data-driven decision-making, and other pertinent topics.
